Glenn Gould (1932-1982). At the age of 31
he renounced public life and dedicated himself to the recording studio.
Tone regulating focuses on the density of
the hammer felt and its relationship to the string. Whereas a tuner listens for
variations in pitch, a tone regulator listens for subtle variations in tone
quality. And while a tuner employs a tuning fork as a guide, the tone regulator
uses his memory of a sound to guide him.
Gould adored the spare, reserved music of Orlando Gibbons, a 16th century Tudor composer.
Gould performed best on his Steinway CD318, which was built during the second world war. He admired its extremely light action, which he found most suitable for Bach’s music. When this piano was damaged during transport in 1971 he was unconsolable. Despite many attempts they never managed to restore it to its original glory. At the end Gould switched to Yamaha and used it to record his Goldberg variations in 1981.
